By the end of the year, PENNY had donated food to those in need from 110 of its stores
PENNY continues to strengthen its social responsibility role. By the end of August, one of Hungary’s leading retail chains will be handing over food to those in need from 81 of its stores as a platinum partner of the food rescue network of the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület. Through the strategic cooperation, the company’s goal is to be able to offer food that can no longer be sold commercially, but is still suitable for consumption, for a charitable purpose by the end of 2022, with the involvement of its 110 stores.
PENNY has been supporting the Hungarian Food Bank Association, which is connected to hundreds of charitable organizations, with food donations for almost ten years. With this project, one of the leading department store chains in Hungary is further strengthening its CSR activities, and at the same time, it is also taking significant action against food waste. Food donation through the central warehouse in Alsónémedi has been taking place since 2012. The recommended fruits and vegetables, bakery products, dairy products, cold meats and meats can no longer be marketed due to their short shelf life, but they are still fully suitable for human consumption.
“Until December 2021, we delivered nearly HUF 45 million worth of donated food from our warehouses through the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület to numerous organizations that make the daily lives of many, many thousands of needy people easier with their daily donation activities.”
– Eszter Kazatsay, PENNY’s head of communications in Hungary says, who also highlighted that food rescues are already taking place directly from stores.
