Grumpy notes at the beginning of the year
As an active ‘headhunter’ I am experiencing the influx of expats for the second time. The first wave came in the early 1990s and now because of the second wave many well-educated and experienced Hungarian executives are without jobs – on their own labour market. Who understands this phenomenon? I really don’t because in Hungary domestic employees are supposed to be the cheapest as practically their wage is the only significant cost for employers. Perhaps international companies are testing their future executives in Hungary and if they perform according to expectations, they can move on to a bigger market. Those who are out of job have to wait patiently for the right offer. It is a difficult period but a supportive family and friends can help to live through hard times until the perfect chance manifests. One has to be prepared to fight for opportunities and sometimes it is better to go for a chance that is less than optimal – even more so because the seemingly ideal job often turns out to be something other than perfect. A good combination of human and professional values is guaranteed to increase the prestige of Hungarian workforce and those who fight for the chance will get what they need.
