A Eurobarometer survey commissioned by the European Commission and published on Thursday shows that a majority of Europeans support the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and more than half of farmers (56%) believe that the level of EU financial support to help stabilise their incomes is adequate.
The survey shows that 88% of respondents agree that the EU should continue to support farmers to practice farming that is beneficial for the climate and the environment.
EU citizens value farmers highly, with 92% saying that “agriculture and rural areas are important for the future of the EU”. 62% of respondents believe that the agricultural sector has already made a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
The survey shows that Europeans “widely” consider EU trade agreements to be a success and a large majority believe that they bring significant benefits to EU agriculture and consumers. 76% of respondents agree that these agreements ensure the diversity of the EU’s agricultural market and supply.
73% of respondents believe that trade agreements increase EU agricultural exports worldwide and promote EU labour and environmental standards.
In terms of priorities and expectations, the majority of respondents believe that ensuring a stable food supply in the EU is important (94%), that ensuring “reasonable food prices” for consumers is crucial (92%), that ensuring sustainable management of natural resources is essential (91%) and that strengthening the role of farmers in the food chain is necessary (90%).
70% of respondents believe that the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) contributes to ensuring safe, healthy and sustainable food of good quality. 72 percent of respondents believe that the CAP also contributes to the sustainable management of natural resources, the development of research and digital solutions supporting the agricultural and food sector (71 percent), and the strengthening of the role of farmers in the food chain (70 percent).
