Retail is growing stronger: where and how much do Hungarians earn and spend?
Hungarian retail is gradually strengthening, but according to the data, there are still significant differences in earnings and spending between the country’s regions. In the first nine months of 2024, the national average net salary (excluding discounts) exceeded 421 thousand forints, while retail turnover per capita was around 149 thousand forints – mfor.hu points out.
Significant regional differences
According to the analysis of the Buksza blog, the differences in earnings and spending within the country remain significant. In Budapest, for example, the average net salary exceeds 500 thousand forints, of which almost 180 thousand forints per capita are spent on in-store purchases. In contrast, in Nógrád County, which has one of the lowest salaries, in-store spending per capita is just over 111 thousand forints.
In other areas, the ratio between earnings and spending also differs. In Zala, Veszprém and Somogy counties, people spend 42-49 percent of their income on shopping. One reason for this is that tourism in the Balaton region contributes significantly to local trade turnover: holidaymakers’ purchases are also reflected in the data.
The situation of retail
Although the sector is booming, rising wages and changing shopping habits remain key factors. Due to regional differences in purchasing power, individual regions experience inflation and price increases differently. Economic developments in the coming months may also affect the retail sector and consumer behavior.
