It is worth choosing domestic fish for Christmas
The fishing industry is already in full swing preparing for the Christmas season, nearly 40% of domestic fish production reaches the table at this time. This year too, you will be able to get fresh fish of excellent quality and a large selection – draw attention to the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Association (MA-HAL).

Lake farms account for the majority of domestic fish production
Hungary is in a fortunate position, as it can provide consumers with excellent quality freshwater fish due to its ideal geographical location for aquaculture fish production. According to data from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI), in 2021, fish consumption per person was 6.52 kg, which means an increase of 0.15 kg compared to 2020. The goal is to make as many domestic fish as possible.
Last year, the volume of Hungarian fish production was 21,184 tons, more than 80 percent of which was concentrated in three regions: Northern Great Plain, Southern Transdanubia, Southern Great Plain. Economically, our most important fish species is still the carp, which accounted for 83.2 percent of the production of fish meat for consumption in the lake economy in 2021. The dominant part of domestic fish production is accounted for by pond farms, the area of which was operated was 25,937 hectares in 2021, which unfortunately shows a downward trend, since the poor weather of recent years is not favorable for fish production. The amount of fish produced in precision systems was 5,672 tons in 2021, which represented a 7 percent increase compared to the previous year, and an increasing trend is expected to be experienced in 2022 as well. The second largest freshwater fish species produced in Hungary is the African catfish, according to the latest FAO data, our country produces the most African catfish in the EU (5,298 tons in 2021).
