Wine prices rose in the first half of 2025

According to AKI PÁIR data, the selling price of wines produced and sold domestically without geographical indications and those with protected geographical indications increased by 18 percent to almost 35 thousand forints per hectoliter between January and June 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. Among wines with protected geographical indications, the processing selling price of white wines was 14 percent (33 thousand forints/hectoliter), and that of red and rosé wines was approximately 6 percent (36.9 thousand forints/hectoliter) higher than in the first half of 2024.

Among the wines with a protected designation of origin produced domestically and sold abroad, the average selling price of Tokaj white wines increased by 6 percent to 88.1 thousand forints/hectoliter between January and June 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. The selling price of Eger red and rosé wines was 68.4 thousand forints per hectoliter, almost 2 percent higher than the price a year earlier.

According to KSH data, Hungary’s wine foreign trade balance (excluding sparkling wine and champagne) was positive in both volume and value in the January-May 2025 period

It was about 9 percent lower in volume than a year earlier, while it increased by nearly 6 percent in value. The largest share (66 percent) of the volume sold on the foreign market was accounted for by still wines, whose exports decreased by almost 17 percent to 316 thousand hectoliters in the period under review. Bottled wine shipments increased by approximately 11 percent to 163.1 thousand hectoliters, and their value increased by 15 percent to 10.5 billion forints. Hungarian white wines continued to be the most sought-after on the international market, accounting for 78 percent of exports in the observed period.
