EM: more green cars were on the road by the end of September than in the entire record year of last year
So far, more than 93,000 pure electric cars have been equipped with green license plates in Hungary. Since February, a greater number of climate-friendly vehicles have been put into service in the eighth month than in any previous month, the Ministry of Energy (ME) announced on its Facebook page on Tuesday.
From January to September, 22,628 e-cars were equipped with a light green official license plate, more than the best-performing year so far in 2024. After nine months, the peak decision is now certain. Assuming an unchanged pace of recovery, the new annual record could exceed 30,000 units. If the fourth quarter of this year brings a similar increase to the previous three, the most environmentally friendly domestic fleet will reach 100,000 units this year, the ministry announced.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the number of electric cars in Hungary has increased twelvefold since the beginning of 2020, doubling compared to the fall of 2023.
Further expansion may be greatly facilitated by the fact that the budget for the corporate e-car program has been increased by HUF 10 billion. Of the support available until December 1, even the original HUF 30 billion budget has not been fully committed in contracts.
Companies striving for more sustainable operation should therefore definitely apply, especially because the operation and maintenance of modern electric cars are cheaper than those with conventional engines, the ministry pointed out.
