Tetra Pak® is the first to use bio-based plastic for carton packaging
For the first time in the industry, Tetra Pak® uses bio-based plastic for making drink cartons. The world leader in food processing and packaging solutions announced that all packaging manufactured in the Brazilian market would be made of polyethylene from sugar cane. As a result of the company’s innovation – combined with paperboard – 82 percent of the 1,000ml Tetra Brik® Aseptic Edge drink carton consists of renewable-source material. Tetra Pak developed the new packaging solution in February for fruit juices produced by Coca-Cola’s Brazilian affiliate. Following its success the company made it available to all of its 150 customers sourcing from Brazil – 13 billion bio-based LDPE (low-density polyethylene) cartons will be sold a year. Zita Molnár, communications director of Tetra Pak Hungária Zrt. told our magazine that the new innovation is a great step in the direction of the company’s ultimate goal: making 100-percent renewable-source drink cartons.
