GMO-free honey producers may gain advantage
Hungarian beekeepers can gain advantage on the European Union’s market, if it will be indicated mandatory that the honey contains genetically modified (GMO) pollen. In Hungary only GMO-free honey is produced, due to the regulations – Tabajdi Csaba, Hungarian Socialist Party MEP told.
Tabajdi presented, that the European Commission suggested that the pollens should be considered as natural component in case of honey, although the European Court previously indicated that it is a component of honey. The difference is important because in the case of ingredients it should be separately examined that the GMO ratio exceeds 0.9 percent, while the Committee's proposal would mean that the the specified limit would be applied for the honey as a whole.
