EU Alert and Cooperation Network 2024 Summary Published
The European Union’s Alert and Cooperation Network (ACN) recorded more than 9,400 notifications in food safety, animal and plant health issues in 2024. Most cases came through the RASFF system, the majority of which concerned food safety. The ACN network aims to ensure rapid and effective cooperation between Member States, thereby helping to address problems threatening consumer safety as soon as possible.
The RASFF (Food and Feed Safety Alert System) registered 5,250 cases in 2024, of which 91% were food-related. Hungary was affected by 309 RASFF notifications, mainly related to poultry meat, vegetables, fruit and cereal products. 63 cases were initiated by the Hungarian authorities. Within the European Union, the most common problems were with Polish and French products, while Hungarian-made products were involved in less than 1% of cases (38 cases).
3,212 cases were reported to the AAC (Administrative Assistance and Cooperation) system in 2024
The majority of these were related to food: incorrect documentation, inadequate labelling or storage conditions, and problems with the composition of products. Hungary was affected by 111 AAC notifications, of which 16 were initiated by our country.
The FFN (Food Fraud Network) registered 546 cases, a significant number of which were problems related to animals not intended for food production
Hungary was affected by 84 such cases, including food supplements and honey adulteration, as well as illegal pet trade. The PHN (Plant Health System), launched in 2023, received 397 reports last year, mainly related to plant pests, incorrect plant passports and packaging material markings. Our country was affected by only 5 cases, of which Hungary was the notifier in 3.
Two new alert systems were also launched in 2024, the Pet Animal Network (PAN) and the Farm Animal Network (AWN)
The PAN network, established to deal with abuses related to pet animals, handled 52 reports, mostly related to illegal trade. The AWN network recorded a total of 3 reports regarding the transport and keeping conditions of farm animals. Hungary was affected by 24 cases under the PAN, while only 1 case was related to the AWN.
