Shrink inflation has also reached the cheeseburger
Inflation and shrinkflation, i.e. the reduction of the size of products in addition to the increase in prices, are causing more and more concern among consumers. One of Telex’s readers, Gábor, drew attention to the fact that McDonald’s cheeseburgers also fell victim to this trick.
The price doubled in 4 years
Gábor described his experiences as follows: “It would be fun to talk about how much smaller + more expensive, for example, it has become. the Mekis cheeseburger. Because from this month, I saw, it became even smaller. The approx. compared to five years ago, it is now 37 percent…”
At first hearing, this seemed like too precise a calculation, but based on Gábor’s Hungarian method, in 2019 four cheeseburgers still fit in a Carte d’Or box, while now they are lying around. Measured in centimeters, Gábor’s results showed a 37 percent decrease.
Telex investigated the allegations. According to the company’s Hungarian website, the hamburger weighs 103 grams (248 kcal), while the cheeseburger weighs 118 grams (297 kcal). According to archive data, these values have been the same for a year, but no previous data was found.
Therefore, Telex looked at the American, British, Chinese and other national pages of McDonald’s products. The American hamburger and cheeseburger contain almost exactly the same number of calories as the Hungarian versions (250 and 300 kcal respectively), which makes it likely that they are the same. This was already the case in 2017, so the dimensions have not changed significantly in recent years.
