Agricultural machinery sales have picked up this year
The agricultural machinery market is undergoing a significant transformation worldwide – and Hungary is no exception – which is also influenced by technological development, weather extremes, and the development of support systems.
In the first months of 2025, agricultural machinery sales started at a slower pace. Due to the difficulties of recent years – drought, low crop prices, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the development of the interest rate environment – the purchasing power and willingness of Hungarian farmers to purchase machinery was lower than before. In the first half of 2025, there was a slight recovery compared to sales a year earlier, but the decline was still significant compared to machinery sales in the first half of 2023.
After the hectic changes of recent years, the Hungarian machinery market in I–III 2025 appears to be picking up again in the first quarter
Individual farms and joint-stock companies purchased new agricultural machinery and equipment worth 163.5 billion forints by September this year, which is a 21 percent increase compared to the first to third quarters of 2024. However, there is a 28 percent gap compared to machine sales two years earlier. In addition to the sale of new machinery, which depends on the availability of support funds, parts sales have been continuously increasing in recent years.
Machines are becoming increasingly complex, parts have replacement periods, and the need for service is increasingly significant
Repair also includes digital settings and software updates. Farmers spent 78.2 billion forints on purchasing parts necessary for the operation and repair of machines by September this year, which is a 9 percent increase compared to parts sales in the January–September period of 2024. Farmers spent 75 billion forints on the purchase of power machinery in the period January-September 2025, which accounted for 46 percent of the total value of agricultural machinery investments. Within power machinery investments, tractors represented 55 percent and grain combines 22 percent, while within total sales, tractors represented 25 percent and grain combines 10 percent.
