Melon season is getting longer and longer
In retail, the melon season is being postponed more and more, say Auchan experts. From the beginning of April to the end of September, the department stores sell melons. At first, the goods arrive from Africa, then the popular fruit is procured from the Mediterranean countries. Hungarian melons hit the shelves at the end of June, first with cantaloupe, and from the beginning of July, customers can expect Hungarian watermelon. By the way, this season started earlier thanks to the warm weather, and it is thanks to the conscious cooperation with the producers that late-ripening varieties are grown, as well as there are regional differences in the ripening time, which can push the season to the end of September.
The variety known as watermelon in Hungarian does not actually have any proven Greek origin, rather Africa and India are considered its homeland. There are more than 17 types of watermelon in Hungary.
In Auchan’s interpretation, the season lasts from the 13th to the 39th week, i.e. from April to the end of September. In the spring, melons are brought in from Senegal, Morocco and Egypt, and later from Italy, Spain and Greece.
Thanks to the great heat, the Hungarian cantaloupe was already in the shops at the end of June, and the domestic watermelon will also arrive in the first week of July. They have suppliers from several regions of Hungary in order to overcome adverse weather conditions, and the rate of ripening varies from region to region, which ensures a continuous supply. The goods are purchased from Békés, Baranya, Tolna and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties. Striped, black-skinned, seedless and yellow-skinned sliced watermelons, mini melons and cantaloupes will now only come to Auchan from Hungarian producers. In addition, melons and piel de sapo varieties are also imported throughout.
