The price of chicken meat keeps falling
In Hungary, in the first week of the year, the producer prices of slaughter chickens and slaughter turkeys decreased significantly compared to the same period of the previous year – claims the Agrárközgazdasági Intézet (AKI). According to the data, the producer price of broiler chicken was HUF 410.8/kg, which represents a decrease of 18.4 percent in one year. The producer price of slaughter turkey was HUF 597.7/kg, 11.8 percent less than in the same period of the previous year.
The processing sales prices of fresh chicken meat also decreased similarly. The price of chicken breast fillet was HUF 1,706.6/kg, 17.5 percent lower than a year earlier. Bone-in chicken breast was HUF 1,112.2/kg, which represents a decrease of 18.1 percent. The price of bone-in chicken leg is HUF 870.65/kg, 1.5 percent less than in the same period of 2023, and chicken liver with heart is HUF 887.7/kg, 7.4 percent cheaper than last year.
Based on data from the European Commission, the processing sales price of whole chicken in the EU was 2.6072 EUR/kg on average, 0.4 percent cheaper than in the same period of the previous year. Hungary calculates a price of EUR 2.4525/kg, which represents a 2.1 percent increase compared to the previous year. The most expensive chickens are found in Germany at a price of 4.19 EUR/kg, while the cheapest in Bulgaria are 1.91647 EUR/kg, which shows a decrease of 9.7 percent compared to last year.
