A supermarket offers dried and seasoned crickets
Portugal’s Continente is the first European retail chain to offer a complete line of insects. At present, the Portuguese Food Safety Authority accepts seven types of legume as food suitable for human consumption, of which crickets are the most popular.
Continente now offers a variety of dried, seasoned crickets. The basic package is crickets with sea salt, but we can also choose crickets with thyme and pepper, or crickets with tomato and oregano. All three variations cost 4.49 euros.
According to the store chain, customers rarely take the cricket as a main dish, they usually prefer it to a salad, as a healthy source of extra protein, but there are also those who see the cricket snack as a snack or a beer skate, which is marketed by a Portuguese startup famous for its bold innovations, Portugal Bugs.
The new products hit store shelves in the first week of August.
