One thousands small grocery stores disappeared in a year
A total of 17,729 general food stores were operating in Hungary at the beginning of this year. In January 2014 their number was 18,679. This means a 5 percent decline. This reduction is slightly larger than the decline of teh last few years – the Nielsen consumer information and knowledge services company’s last census reveals, among other facts.
If we look at the trends, the network of grocery stores with more than 200 square meters of sales space has expanded in all channels. In the beginning of January the number of grocery stores with more than 2500 square meters of sales space increased with 172 (+1 percent increase compared to the previous year). The number of grocery stores between 401 to 2500 square meters increased with 1,071 (+29 percent); while the number of 201-400-square-meter grocery stores increased by 847 (+17 percent).
