To protect our health, take antioxidants
Maintaining our health, strengthening our immune system, reducing the negative physiological effects of stress is always important, but there are situations and periods when this can be especially important. You can often hear about free radicals in our body, which are harmful to cells in large quantities. For example, stress, smoking and illness can increase their levels – this is when antioxidants come into play, which can curb it. Our body also produces antioxidants, but in old age their effectiveness and amount may decrease. In many cases, it may be worthwhile to replace them ‘from the outside’.
What are antioxidants and why are they useful?
Our body needs oxygen to convert the food we eat (such as sugars, fats) into energy. Without this, we would not be able to survive. Oxidation products, so-called free radicals, are also formed during the conversion and “burning” of nutrients into energy and the storage of the resulting energy. Free radicals have a high amount of cell-damaging effects – they can even lead to the formation of tumors and atherosclerosis – so to counteract this, our body also produces antioxidant compounds that neutralize them.
