Let’s sweeten the holidays with fewer calories
The holiday season is not a time for abstinence, if we are not careful, we can gain up to three kilos on average at this time, which is not easy to lose in January. We usually eat more than usual, we toast each other more often and we don’t resist snacking either. Inadvertently, we grab one or two pieces of brown sugar from the tree, the end of a bagel slips off, we crunch a bowl of dried fruit or oily seeds, and these all contain a lot of calories.
Wherever possible, it is worth changing the recipes a little, for example using 10-15 percent less sugar than specified. In the case of diabetes or insulin resistance, low-energy or energy-free sweeteners can be the solution instead of traditional sweeteners. In addition, let’s pay attention to several meals a day so that we don’t overeat one or two times, to moderation, careful snacking, and that we can be with our loved ones not only during meals. A hearty winter walk or other outdoor program involving movement can also be an equally pleasant pastime, advises the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians.
If you prepare festive desserts with sweeteners, you should know the following so that the end result does not disappoint – dieticians summarize the properties of sugar substitutes, which can be divided into two large groups: sugar substitutes (these include: Xylitol, Erythritol and Sorbitol), and energy-free, intense sweeteners (this includes, for example: Aspartame, Cyclamate, Saccharin or Stevia).
