The price of beer doubled
In the case of lager-type beers, the prices of lager-type beers in Hungary rose the most in the entire European Union. The rate of beer price increase was twice as high as in second-placed Lithuania, and more than three times as expensive as the average in the EU.
A large increase in the price of beer took place in Hungary in the first month of the year compared to the last month of last year. In January, the best-selling beers priced at HUF 280-300 cost HUF 400 or more, and they stuck at that level. According to the latest statistics of KSH, prices increased by 2.3 percent from December 2022 to January 2023, reports Infostart.
Last year, with the exception of a larger, 4-5 percent swing in July and October, the consumer price of beer in Hungary was almost stagnant throughout the year. Compared to this, in January 2023, all of them fell flat. The only exceptions to this are boxed or draft beers sold in restaurants, as their price index only increased by 2 percentage points between December 2022 and January 2023. In an annual comparison, in January 2023, most price indices were at least 30, but in two cases they reached almost 40 percent.
