Rossmann tested drone home delivery
DODO, which offers data-driven logistics solutions, and the Rossmann drugstore network, which has also had a popular webshop for years, launched a unique domestic pilot project for the drone delivery of products ordered to the home. In the first phase of testing, they are investigating how quickly they can use drones to fulfill orders – while guaranteeing safe delivery conditions. To this end, a test flight was carried out as a first step, and the time required to place the package on the drone, as well as for takeoff and landing, was also assessed.
The first test flight in preparation for the delivery of home deliveries took place on XI. district, in front of the Rossmann store in the Savoya Park shopping center, and the destination is III. was designated in the Garden City part of the district. When choosing the route, it was an important aspect that the drone flight covers a relatively long distance and diverse geographical terrain, in preparation for the diversity of future deliveries that can be carried out by air. The start point and the delivery destination are located 15 kilometers apart as the crow flies, but the drone flew over a longer distance, as it traveled part of the way over the Danube.
During the first test flight, the drone did not yet transport or deliver a package, as the primary goal this time was to assess the time required for each work phase. Special attention was also paid to creating safe conditions for delivery by air, in the framework of which a simulation of lifting the package into the air took place. It took a total of 14 minutes to fly in the route, the average flight height was between 20 and 50 meters, and the drone traveled at an average speed of 50 kilometers per hour, however, the device’s flight speed is expected to be regulated by law in the future. The simulation could be performed with accurate results, since the weight of the package to be transported does not significantly affect the drone’s flight speed.
