A rise in prices is expected on the potato market: Poland and Europe are also affected

Although potatoes were still relatively cheap in Poland at the beginning of September, based on market analyses, price increases are expected in the longer term, not only there, but throughout Europe. Due to the vagaries of the weather – a dry summer and sudden rains – the Polish potato crop has become of poor quality and low quantity, which would justify an increase in prices. However, the price pressure caused by “Sunday producers” is keeping the market low at the moment – we learn from the article of the Agrárszektor.

Supply pressure and temporary price pressure

“Sunday growers” farm on a smaller area and often want to sell their produce quickly, even at lower prices, to avoid losses. This temporarily puts pressure on prices, which the demand side takes advantage of. However, this is a difficult situation for larger producers, as the current low prices are not sustainable in the long term.

Market prospects in Europe

In Poland, the wholesale price of potatoes is currently HUF 62-92/kg, depending on the variety and region. Although this price is slightly higher than the average of the last five years, it is still much lower than the previous year. Similar processes are taking place on the European markets: potatoes are already more expensive in Ukraine and Moldova, and the expected price increase will be even more noticeable in the future.

In Hungary in September, the price of domestically grown potatoes on the Budapest Wholesale Market ranged between HUF 180-220/kg. However, the Polish market does not expect significant foreign import pressure in the long term, as the prospects for the crop in Western Europe are not promising either.
