Carrot prices rise in Ukraine due to supply shortage
By the end of April, the price of carrots on Ukrainian markets increased significantly, FruitVeB reported, based on EastFruit’s analysis. There is a huge demand for particularly high-quality root vegetables, while stocks are rapidly running out, so the supply is becoming increasingly scarce, writes Agrarszektor.
The intense demand for high-quality carrots – similar to beetroot, which is in a similar situation – has led to a buying spree by wholesale companies and retail chains. Currently, carrots are sold on wholesale markets at prices ranging from 30 to 40 hryvnias/kg (260 to 345 forints/kg), depending on quality and quantity, which is an average increase of 21% compared to mid-April and almost 4.5 times higher than the prices measured in the same period last year.
According to EastFruit experts, the price increase is primarily caused by the seasonal depletion of high-quality stocks. Market sources reported that wholesale buyers are finding it increasingly difficult to secure the required quantity of premium carrots.
