A significant price increase has taken place on the domestic poultry market in recent months, according to a recent report by the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI). The producer price of both slaughter chicken and slaughter turkey has increased, which is also felt by customers: in stores, mainly chicken breast fillet, turkey breast and eggs have become more expensive. Meanwhile, poultry meat exports have also been more restrained – the weakening of foreign market demand and the increase in costs have both left their mark on exports – writes Agrárszektor.

Chicken breast: already over 2,100 forints

The producer price of slaughter chicken reached 457 forints per kilogram in the 28th week, which corresponds to an annual increase of 8.9%. The biggest price increase was for chicken breast fillet: it was sold for 2,166 forints per kilogram, which is more than 21% higher than the level a year earlier. However, the price of chicken legs decreased slightly compared to the previous week, somewhat dampening the overall picture. The price of a fresh, shrink-wrapped whole chicken increased to 935 forints (+7.6% year-on-year), while the price of chicken packaged in juice increased even more, by 16.3%.

Turkey: breasts for almost 2,800 forints

Similar trends can be observed on the market for turkey products. The producer price of slaughter turkey reached 672.7 forints per kilogram, which represents an annual increase of 15.8%. The biggest jump was made by the lower turkey leg, which became more expensive by almost 40%. The price of turkey breast fillets has crossed the 2,800-forint mark, while that of turkey breasts is following the trend with an increase of around 9%.

Eggs: Unit price close to 100 forints

The price of eggs is also rising rapidly. The packing house price of M+L size eggs from cage farming is already 56.22 forints per piece, which is a 37.2% annual increase. Deep-litter eggs are even more expensive, costing 73.71 forints per piece (+26%). The gross price of eggs on the Budapest wholesale market was around 72 forints, while in retail they are already asking for between 80 and 100 forints for an egg – this is a serious burden for households.
