Christmas Baking Will Be More Expensive This Year: How to Save on Ingredients
Christmas baking in 2024 is expected to be significantly more expensive, as the prices of essential ingredients have continued to rise in recent months. Flour, sugar, butter, and eggs—the staples of most holiday recipes—have all seen sharp price increases due to global economic pressures and rising agricultural costs. Those planning to bake in larger quantities, such as homemade bejgli, will feel the pinch even more.
For instance, the legendary bejgli recipe from the Horváth Ilona cookbook now costs 50% more to make than it did four years ago. To offset the rising costs, many are turning to regular scans of store promotions and discounts, which often include deals on baking essentials. As the holidays approach, these savings opportunities can help ensure that festive treats remain both delicious and affordable.
At Lidl, vegan “butter alternatives” are available for 599 HUF, ground biscuits for 419 HUF per half-kilo, and frozen puff pastry for 399 HUF.
