Unchecked, Ukrainian honey arrives at Hungarian extraction plants at dumping prices
The turnover of honey produced by domestic producers fell significantly last year, which not only puts beekeepers in a difficult situation, but also makes pollination in agriculture questionable in the long term – warn Tehetzts meh more! supporting organizations of the program.
Last year, in addition to the Chinese honey import, the Ukrainian one also strengthened, from which the honey also arrives at dumping prices, unchecked, to the Hungarian extraction plants, which therefore did not buy a significant amount of domestic honey. In the absence of large buyers, Hungarian producers are trying to sell their goods directly to customers, for which they are not prepared on the one hand, and on the other hand, demand is decreasing due to inflation, while production costs have increased. Beekeepers in other EU countries also face similar difficulties, which is why they are urging the tightening of the EU designation of origin and the quality control of imports.
“If the situation does not change, honey production in the European Union may cease within ten to fifteen years. This puts not only beekeepers in a difficult situation, but also the producers of crops that depend on pollination. After all, you can import honey, but not pollination, and due to the destruction of wild pollinators, it is increasingly done by domestic bees.”
– warns József Vida, the You can do more! program founder.
