It was unimaginable decades ago to cultivate crops on other planets or on the Moon, but today serious research is being conducted to explore these possibilities. The University of Warwick published an article on whether it is possible to grow potatoes on Mars. The article mentioned the movie “The Martian,” in which the protagonist is left alone on Mars and tries to survive by growing potatoes. The University of Warwick believes that this is not only a fantastic idea, but also a good starting point for future Martian farmers.
The Mars soil has its advantages and disadvantages. The surface of red iron oxide contains basalt and basaltic regolith. Previous research has shown that the basaltic soil of the Moon and Mars is suitable for sprouting plants, and the Martian soil even has better water retention, which is advantageous for plant growth.
The minerals are present in sufficient quantities for the development of seedlings, except for reactive nitrogen, which requires fertilization. However, the Martian soil contains another danger in the form of the compound group called perchlorates, which may pose problems for future Martian cereals and human health. Therefore, the Martian soil should be pre-treated before the first crop is grown in the nearby spaceport.
