Diesel versus electric truck: ALDI measured the consumption difference
ALDI Hungary has once again expanded its fleet of electric trucks. At the end of 2021, the retail chain was the first in the country to put an electric semi-trailer truck on the market, followed by a single truck, and now the electric vehicle fleet will be enriched with two more e-trucks: another semi-trailer truck and a 26-tonne truck will serve the stores in the capital and the Pest County . In practice, the company also compared the consumption of diesel and electric trucks on the same route with the same load, the result of which accelerated the decision to expand the fleet.
ALDI’s two new e-trucks went into circulation, doubling the company’s electric truck fleet. The expansion took place after the company analyzed the operational and operating experience gained during the mileage of more than 150,000 km of e-trucks to date. An important role in the decision was played by the fact that the company carried out comparative consumption measurements between diesel and electric vehicles of the same design and load in the midst of different weather conditions and road conditions, as well as on flat routes. After the measurement, it was clearly proven that the zero local emissions of the electric powertrain contribute to a precisely detectable reduction of harmful emissions and the improvement of air quality, and at the same time, the e-drive has a more economical consumption than the diesel version. In 2024, for example, on a spring day, the company delivered goods with the same load, under the same weather and traffic conditions, to the logistics center in Biatorbágy and the XIII. between the Pannónia street store in the district. The diesel-powered truck used 28.89 liters of diesel fuel per 117 km, which, according to factory data, meant 64.35 kilograms of CO2 emissions. The electric version achieved a consumption of 183 kWh on the same route.
