Wizz Air is expanding dynamically
Wizz Air’s ambitious expansion plans include launching flights to India in the next year and a half, as well as breaking into the Pakistani market, Portfolio reported. With these steps, the airline is further strengthening its position in international air transport, and starting next March, it will put its new, narrow-body, long-range Airbus A321 XLR aircraft into service on the route between London and Jeddah.
On Wizz Air’s new flights, which will be nearly seven-hour journeys, the usual long-haul comfort services such as reclining seats, in-flight entertainment systems and free meals will not be available. József Váradi, the airline’s general manager, said in an interview in Abu Dhabi that all extra services will have to be paid for – from water to snacks and hand luggage – as their delivery is costly. The equipment on the new planes will be the same as those used on shorter routes, and passengers will have to share three on-board lavatories.
The purpose of the new model of the low-cost airline is to “democratize” air travel, i.e. passengers can choose from different services according to their own needs. The price of the basic ticket is 134.99 pounds – about HUF 63,000 – but it is possible to purchase extra services, such as unlimited food and drinks, more legroom and luggage.
Wizz Air sees potential not only in India and Pakistan: it also wants to launch more flights to Saudi Arabia, as these routes are popular in the United Arab Emirates market. Váradi emphasized that the importance of the Abu Dhabi base in the life of the airline is constantly increasing, and currently accounts for 7% of their capacity, which is expected to continue to expand.
The airline’s management is confident that the cost-effective operating model and entry into new markets will make Wizz Air successful in the international air transport market in the long term.
