Wizz Air’s green investment is an award winner
Wizz Air won the European Strategic Investment of the Year award at the 2023 SAF Investor Awards in London.
Wizz Air announced that it won the European Strategic Investment of the Year award at the 2023 SAF Investor Awards in London. The event honors industry leaders who are supporting the decarbonization of aviation with significant capital investments and thereby promoting the industry’s development.
Last year, Wizz Air invested 5 million pounds – i.e. more than HUF 2.1 billion – in the British company Firefly in order to support research and development related to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Thanks to the innovative process developed by Firefly, sustainable jet fuel can be produced from the available sewage sludge in significant quantities. According to life cycle analyses, the company’s product can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 percent compared to fossil jet fuels. The deal with Firefly will allow Wizz Air to supply its UK bases with biofuel from 2028 – estimated to be approximately 525,000 tonnes over 15 years.
