Digital services: epoch-making regulation for the safety of the online space
In order to create a fairer business environment and greater choice, the proposal for a regulation on digital markets imposes obligations on giant platforms acting as “gatekeepers” (i.e. almost unavoidable due to their online position).
In order to prevent unfair business practices, the gatekeepers are, for example, obliged to: to provide third parties with the possibility of connecting to their services. This means that smaller platforms can ask dominant messaging platforms to allow their users to send text and voice messages and files between different apps. Users can thus choose from several options and avoid not being able to switch apps or platforms depending on one technology; and
to allow business users access to the data they produce, so that they can advertise and sell their own offers even outside the gatekeeper’s platform.
