“The best consumer protection is competition, but at the same time, the market behavior of the competition players can never harm the interests of consumers.” – emphasized Balázs Csaba Rigó, President of the Economic Competition Authority, in his welcome address at the Digital Consumer Protection 2024 conference organized by GVH in Budapest. Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy gave an opening speech at the professional event, who emphasized: “The primary goal for the Government is to protect families and domestic SMEs. In order to do this, an equal balance of power must be created between domestic and foreign webshops, as well as online and offline retail.”

On September 19, the Economic Competition Authority organized a professional conference entitled Digital consumer protection 2024. Within the framework of the event, the participants discussed key topics such as the fundamental relationship between digitization and consumer protection, the risks of online shopping and the issue of youth education. In addition, the participants were able to gain insight into the psychological aspects of the topic.

The system of consumer protection in Hungary relies on several pillars. In addition to the GVH, the financial supervision of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), the National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH), and the capital and county government offices play a significant role. The professional management of the area was taken over by the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) on August 1, 2024, which is thus the main pillar of the domestic consumer protection system.

At the conference held at the GVH headquarters, Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy emphasized in his opening speech that the proportion of the population buying online in Hungary grew at one of the fastest rates in the EU, while a third of customers experienced problems while shopping. He added that it is necessary to make domestic online retailers competitive, and at the same time, for the sake of consumers, the Government will further strengthen the activity of consumer protection in e-commerce as well.
