It fell in December, and retail sales in Germany decreased throughout the year
Due to significantly increased prices, retail sales in Germany began to decline in the second half of the year and already fell in December. The turnover of food fell to a record extent last year, based on the report of the federal statistical office, Destatis.
According to preliminary data from Destatis, in December, with price, calendar and seasonal adjustments, retail turnover decreased by 5.3 percent compared to the previous month and decreased by 6.4 percent compared to a year earlier.
In November, retail turnover increased by 1.9 percent on a monthly basis and was 5.9 percent behind November 2021. By December, the market expected a 0.2 percent increase in turnover on a monthly basis and a 1.8 percent decrease from the previous year.
Based on the preliminary data from December, the full-year retail turnover in 2022, adjusted for prices, was 0.6 percent lower than the previous year. Without price adjustments, retail sales increased by 7.8 percent.
