Danone and Diageo one step closer to carbon neutrality
On the 1st July, Danone announced that an independent global climate change and sustainability consultancy had certified Danone Wexford – a plant in Ireland that produces baby milk – as carbon neutral.
The certification, which comes after ten years of work, will help Danone move closer to its target of becoming a zero net carbon company by 2050.
Emissions have been reduced by improving the energy efficiency of the plant and switching to renewable energy sources, whilst improving waste management.
The resulting 10,000-ton reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the plant’s emissions in 2010, represents a 70% reduction of the production site’s direct carbon footprint. Over the same period, the site has doubled its production volumes.
Drinks manufacturer, Diageo has revealed it plans to make its new distillery in Kentucky, US a carbon-neutral production site. The site will run on 100% renewable electricity and use electrode boilers and a mix of renewable energy sources to power the 72,000-square-foot facility.
