Sugar from sugar
Something is wrong with labelling. I can imagine what customers think when looking at labels saying: sugar X %, fat 0 %” . Beyond the Atlantic, the approach to this issue is that you can say whatever you want on the label, until a smart lawyer sues you for everything you have, while in Europe we have to disclose that there is no oil in sugar. I’ll tell you who is benefiting from this stupid system: people who don’t want you to know what kind of carbohydrates there are in sugar, because there is not enough space on the label. That way, it is impossible to tell what the difference in quality is between two products. Of course, there is nothing wrong with the system in regard of complex products, bit it is hardly ideal for the most basic products. Basic products need space for brand communication as well! The European Platform for Basic Foods has been established, so that we would be able to do exactly that.
