Located in the heart of Upper Austria, this new facility spans across 3,800m² on two floors, with 70m² of dedicated baking space. With a construction time of 15 months and an investment of €19.7 million, the facility will produce 130 different types of bread, pastries and confectionery products made from high-quality ingredients sourced in Austria.
The bakery uses the spatial proximity to the SPAR Austria regional headquarters for efficient logistics processes and synergies and will now supply all INTERSPAR Hypermarkets as well as selected SPAR and EUROSPAR branded stores in Upper Austria and Salzburg.
Technology, sustainability, and craftsmanship
The new INTERSPAR Hypermarket bakery combines state-of-the-art production technologies with traditional craftsmanship. A wide variety of ovens are used on the almost 70m² baking area, including an eight-day oven and four rack ovens. With sourdough, pre-doughs, roasted and scalded pieces and long dough rests, the bakery’s employees produce the optimum product quality, while fully automatic loading and unloading increases efficiency in the production process.
As with all construction projects, INTERSPAR Hypermarkets also attach great importance to sustainability at the bakery in Marchtrenk. For example, the INTERSPAR Hypermarket bakery in Upper Austria works completely without fossil fuels and relies on heat recovery from oven exhaust air and refrigeration system waste heat, as well as 100 percent green electricity. The system is also operated with 100 percent natural CO2 as a refrigerant and can be used as an air-to-water heat pump in the winter months.
In addition to the 38 bakers and confectioners, 17 more colleagues are currently being sought for the new bakery location. In addition, from 2025 onwards, interested young people will have the opportunity to learn an apprenticeship in the new bakery in Marchtrenk.
On the opening Johannes Holzleitner, Managing Director of INTERSPAR Austria, said: “With the opening of our INTERSPAR Hypermarkets bakery in Marchtrenk, we are setting new standards in the combination of traditional craftsmanship and technical innovations. This is where products are created that not only impress with their quality, but also with their sustainable production process.”
