Is there a shortage of chocolate?
While there is only a threat of a shortage of cocoa, another raw material of the confectionery industry, sugar, has already stepped up. Europe already struggled with a sugar shortage last year, and it is expected that there will not be enough sugar next year either.
Côte d’Ivoire is the world’s leading producer of cocoa beans, the sector produces 15 percent of the country’s GDP. Roughly half of the ingredients for the chocolate bars come from here. However, the sector is in serious danger, as it is exposed to increasingly unpredictable weather.
Many of our farmers, who usually grow 500 kilograms, can expect only 200 kilograms this year, which is a big problem
– VG quotes Jean Yao Brou, secretary general of the Anouanze cooperative.
The second largest producer is Ghana. They are also affected by climate change, as their production has also fallen due to the capricious, sometimes droughty weather.
