Pernod Ricard, one of the world’s leading spirits companies, reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly revenue decline, partly due to a decline in sales in the US and China and unfavorable currency movements.

The company said on Thursday that its sales revenue in the fiscal first quarter ended at the end of September fell 14.3 percent year-on-year to 2.384 billion euros from 2.78 billion euros a year earlier. Organic revenue (adjusted for exchange rate fluctuations and corporate acquisitions) fell 7.6 percent, compared to analysts’ expectations of a more modest 7.1 percent decline.

Pernod Ricard’s revenue fell 12 percent in North and South America (including 16 percent in the United States), 4 percent in Europe, and 7 percent in Asia and the rest of the world. Sales in China fell by 27 percent, while in India they grew by 3 percent.

The Pernod Ricard group, founded in 1975, produces and distributes such famous spirits as Absolut vodka, Havana Club rum, Jameson, Ballantine’s and Chivas Regal whiskeys, Martell cognac, Beefeater gin, Malibu and Kahlua liqueurs, Mumm and Perrier-Jouet champagnes, and Olmeca tequila.
