Sunflower and rapeseed seed prices have decreased

Corn hybrids were propagated on 15,782 hectares in 2024, which showed a 38 percent decrease in area compared to the previous period. The amount of seed produced was 41 thousand tons, 57 thousand tons of which were metal-sealed using 271 varieties. The corn sowing area in 2025 was 752.3 thousand hectares, which requires around 15.8 thousand tons of metal-sealed seed, calculated with a seed rate of 21 kilograms/hectare. Nearly a quarter of the metal-sealed volume covered the domestic corn seed demand. End users paid an average of 2,497 thousand forints for 1 ton of hybrid corn in the spring of 2025, 3.2 percent less than a year earlier. According to reports, 20.6 thousand tons of hybrid seeds were delivered to farmers as commodity crop raw material in the spring of 2025. The highest proportion of corn seed was produced in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Békés counties.

Sunflower hybrids were produced on 1077 hectares in 2024, half the area as in 2023

72 percent of the total area is located in the South Transdanubia region. During the propagation, the producers used 28 varieties, of which 99 percent had the I. propagation grade, only 9 hectares became elite and super elite grades. Of the varieties used, 3 were state-certified. 1547 tons of seed were produced in the season and 3991 tons were metal-sealed. In the spring of 2025, sunflowers were sown on 712.4 thousand hectares, the area increased by 5 percent compared to the sowing area a year earlier. The amount of metal-sealed sunflower seeds in the season fully met the 2025 sunflower seed demand, assuming a seed rate of 8 kilograms/hectare. Based on the data received, 3,375 tons of hybrid sunflowers were sold to producers in the first half of 2025. The average selling price of one ton of sunflower hybrids was HUF 7,592,000 per ton in 2025, which was a 2 percent decrease compared to the previous year. In 2024, winter rapeseed hybrids were produced using 10 varieties on 404.5 hectares of propagation area, twice the area of ​​the previous year, and 3,610 tons of raw material were metal-sealed. In the fall of 2025, winter rapeseed was grown on 153.1 thousand hectares, the raw material requirement of which was approximately 460 tons of metal-sealed seeds (calculated with a seed norm of 3 kilograms/hectare). The remaining seed lots formed the basis of exports. The annual traded quantity was 500 tons based on the data received. End users paid an average of 11,182 thousand forints for one ton of winter rapeseed hybrid in the fall of 2024, 11 percent less than a year earlier.
