We can say goodbye to cheap meat and milk
The food industry is undergoing a global transformation, and its effects will already be felt in our everyday meals in 20-30 years. According to food policy analyst Réka Szöllősi, the huge animal husbandry and excessive use of antibiotics are already making the industry unsustainable. In an interview with Pénzcentrum, he said that our way of thinking about our meals must also be transformed in order to face environmental challenges.
Christmas, the biggest food holiday of the year, is usually about overeating. We also need to examine our eating habits, our shopping habits and our goods, taking into account the environmental damage that comes with the production of food. Szöllősi emphasizes that we must rethink the source of pleasure in eating, because this is the only way we can face the environmental challenges of the food industry.
Our food consumption needs to change for both economic and environmental reasons. In the coming years, it is expected that fewer products of animal origin will enter our diet. Sustainable eating is important not only from an environmental point of view, but also from an economic point of view. In addition to meat consumption, plant-based foods also come to the fore, as they are healthier and can be produced more cheaply.
Conscious consumption is also important during the holidays. Although meals can be a means of strengthening togetherness and nurturing traditions, there is also the risk of waste. Planning ahead and choosing wisely can help you avoid overconsumption. Szöllősi emphasizes that we can also preserve our gastronomic traditions during the holidays, while paying attention to food waste and sustainability.
