t the moment Tesco is the biggest wine retailer in Hungary. In the last business year we were working with 82 wine suppliers, three quarters of which were Hungarian. From wine volume sales 97 percent are realised by Hungarian products and in value they have a 96-percent share. Tesco Hungary sold more than 17 million bottles of Hungarian wine. Tesco is the most important retail partner of the National Council of Wine Communities (HNT) n
Márk Maczelka, SPAR Hungary – head of communications
‘In 2014 SPAR sold more than 10 million bottles of wine, 99.9 percent of which were Hungarian. Sales of higher-priced and value-for-money wines have been exceptionally good in the last few years. Special products of Hungarian wineries are sold in the SPAR Selection programme. Each September we publish a wine catalogue and each month INTERSPAR promotional leaflets introduce wines from a selected region, made available at reduced prices for a month.’ n
Judit Tőzsér, Lidl Hungary –
PR manager
‘At annual level Hungary’s more than 160 Lidl stores sell more than 7 million bottles of wine, from which 80 percent are Hungarian. We regularly organise thematic Hungarian wine weeks, introducing the products of wineries large and small. Excellent foreign wines are also sold in Lidl stores. It is a priority for Lidl Hungary to take Hungarian wines abroad, this is the reason why in 2014 we launched WINE EXPO, presenting Hungarian wines to the sourcing managers of neighbouring Lidl stores too. This programme is a great success: in 2014 564 wines from 130 Hungarian wineries introduced themselves to the representatives of Lidl stores from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. While in 2014 800,000 bottles of Hungarian wine ended up on the shelves of Lidl stores abroad, in 2015 this number increased to 2 million.’
ALDI Hungary – trading director
responsible for wines
‘About 70-80 percent of the wines ALDI constantly sells are Hungarian. We offer quality wines at good prices, and our premium wines are available for HUF 2,000-3,000 bottle. 90 percent of the wine selection is dry and they come from the main Hungarian wine regions. Early September we will have a major promotion presenting the wines of prestigious Hungarian wineries with about 20 wine types. These wines will only be available in this promotional period
