A large selection of fish awaits holiday shoppers at Christmas
Ferenc Lévai, the spokesperson of the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Association, spoke optimistically about this year’s Christmas fish offering, which will await customers with an abundant and high-quality selection. According to the Infostart report, the fishing of the lake farms is progressing well, about 60% of the fish stock has already been removed, so a total of 10-12 thousand tons of edible fish can be put on the market for the holidays.
The extreme summer heat had an unusual effect on the fish, as the fat content of the fish decreased due to active movement. Although drought damage occurred in some trans-Danubian areas, the mild autumn compensated for the cold effect of the spring period. Lévai said that in terms of fishery exports, Romania is still a significant buyer market, while in Poland fish production has decreased due to the drought, so Polish traders are also interested in Hungarian fish.
The good news for buyers is that the price of fish will not increase this year. The fishermen – in consultation with the Hungarian National Fishermen’s Association – pursue a sustainable price policy and are willing to “let go of their own” in order to increase domestic fish consumption. Around 3,000 tons of carp are expected to reach the table during the Christmas season, but African catfish is also steadily growing in popularity.
