Shops and hospitality units can both benefit from joining the REpont system
The number of REponts – the beverage container return points of the mandatory deposit return system (DRS) – is steadily increasing.
There are currently over 4,500 points offering this service, including more than 1,500 contracted manual return points. The DRS scheme was launched in Hungary in July 2024 and the number of daily returns reached nearly 6 million already in the first weeks.
Small shops can also be REponts
In Hungary even the smallest shops can become manual drink container return points: shopkeepers can take back drink packaging by using a smartphone app. Why is it worth joining? Research has shown that the option to return cans and bottles is one of the crucial factors for consumers when choosing where to shop. MOHU also pays a handling fee to REponts for each bottle returned. Shop owners can join the REpont system through MOHU’s online administration interface, the Partner Portal.
Drink container return is available to catering outlets and businesses
HoReCa units can also join the DRS system – hotels, cafés, bars and all catering businesses can use MOHU’s mobile reverse vending machines free of charge. This not only saves time for catering establishments, but also reduces the burden on REponts. After successful registration, HoReCa units and companies that meet the relevant conditions can indicate on the Partner Portal the quantity of drink containers they have collected, and from 900 bottles and/or cans upwards the mobile return machine will arrive within 2 days.
Hungarian patent: mobile reverse vending machine
The drink container return vehicle is a Hungarian development that not only speeds up collection, but also helps registered businesses to get the money they are owed sooner. MOHU reimburses shopkeepers for the return fee via the VISSZAVÁLTÓ app. Currently there are 83 mobile reverse vending machines travelling the country.
