Black Friday: From a one-day sale to a month-long shopping frenzy
Black Friday, the huge wave of price reductions that started in the United States, has now taken deep roots in Hungary. The shopping frenzy, which was originally limited to a single day, has expanded over time, and many stores are luring customers with week-long or even all-November sales. With the advent of online shopping, Black Friday has created a real shopping frenzy not only in stores but also on the Internet, writes Pénzcentrum.
The origin of Black Friday
The history of Black Friday dates back to the first half of the 20th century, when the Friday after Thanksgiving in the US began to signal the start of the Christmas shopping season. The name comes from Philadelphia, where the police named the day “Black Friday” because of the huge crowds and traffic chaos. At that time, stores did not yet announce official sales, but customers were already traveling en masse to get their Christmas gifts.
The Transformation of Black Friday in Hungary
In Hungary, Black Friday started to become really well-known around 2015, and now almost the entire month of November is about it. Google Trends data also supports this process: the number of searches increases from the beginning of the month, and the biggest spikes can be seen on every Friday in November. Although the original sale day falls on the last Friday of the month, domestic interest also shows a significant increase on earlier Fridays of the month.
Google Trends shows that Hungarian shoppers are mainly searching for electronic products and popular gifts during this time, while stores are trying to maintain attention throughout the month with increasingly creative promotions.
