Magazine: Organic food – it is still farming and not processing that dominates
Approximately 140,000 hectares of land is used for organic farming in Hungary, cultivated by 1,500 farmers and organisations. Hungary’s Rural Strategy sets the target of tripling the proportion of land cultivated organically (to 6 percent) by 2020.
Dr Péter Roszík, managing director of Biokontroll Hungária Nonprofit Kft. told our magazine that organic products is probably the only segment in food production in which consumption increased during the recession, all over Europe. According to his estimation, at least 80 percent of Hungarian products from organic farming are exported to EU member states and to Switzerland unprocessed. Among organic products fruits and vegetables, dairy and milling industry products (especially spelt) are the biggest categories. Real Nature Kft. is the distributor of Joya soy drinks, some of which are organic (oat, rice, organic yoghurt). The company’s soy drink, soy yoghurt and soy cream sales grew in the last couple of months. Commercial director Barbara Mészáros informed us that the Joya line is a perfect alternative not only for people with casein allergy or lactose sensitivity but also for those who wish to eat healthy. Real Nature Kft. forecasts sales growth for 2012 and will appear with new products on the market.
