The legendary chocolate factory closes
Salzburg Schokolade, a confectionery factory with a long history, has announced that it will close its doors for good at the end of the year. The reason behind the decision is a drastic rise in raw material prices and a serious business conflict, reported Salzburger Nachrichten.
The company already went bankrupt in November 2021, and although the Romanian KEX-Confectionery group tried to save the plant in February of the following year, the challenges proved too great. The group had previously successfully rescued and expanded the confectionery manufacturer Niemetz, but in the case of Salzburg Schokolade, it was not possible to maintain operations.
The closure of the factory was primarily due to the significant increase in energy, raw materials and transportation costs, and the termination of cooperation with one of the largest customers was also a serious blow. The price of cocoa, for example, tripled, which made it economically impossible to continue production for a long time.
