30 years of shopping malls
The history of shopping malls in Hungary – reviewed in a fresh a KSH publication – began with Flórián Üzletközpont thirty years ago. Modern malls, which brought new shopping habits, appeared twenty years later. The first hyper market to open was Interspar in Győr in 1995. The total number of Interspar, Tesco, Auchan and Cora hyper markets was 91 at the time of the publication going to press. 11 of these operate in shopping malls. Retail trade is increasingly concentrated in large centres, which had a total floor space of 1,3 million sqm and combined revenues of HUF 1189 billion – 21 per cent of total revenues in the retail trade – at the end of 2005. Last year 10 shopping malls and 15 hyper markets opened in Hungary.
