Anywhere, anytime, poultry.
The domestic poultry sector is the largest and continuously developing sector of Hungarian animal husbandry, and its importance is outstanding in terms of supplying domestic consumers and exports. The domestic sector is also particularly diverse at the European level. Poultry meats are also popular in Hungary, they are essential ingredients of the Hungarian cuisine.
Summer is here, the time for garden parties and barbecues with friends. It is no coincidence that the consumption of chicken, turkey, duck and goose meat is promoted by the Agrarian Marketing Center (AMC), the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) and the Poultry Product Council (BTT), which was announced at a joint press conference. Based on the 2022 data of the Poultry Product Council, chicken meat is the most popular, accounting for about 85% of all consumption, but extremely low-fat turkey meat (3 kg/person/year) and waterfowl consumption are also popular (2 kg/person /year) is significant. World poultry meat production has increased almost sixfold since 1970, producing one of the most dynamic growths among animal products.
We also have to stand up in international competition
The Deputy Secretary of State responsible for the agricultural market of the Ministry of Agriculture said that product campaigns are important, because even though we are self-sufficient and highly capable of exporting, this cannot mean that we can rest. Tamás Tarpataki highlighted that we have to stand up in an extremely competitive situation, we have to present innovations, for which the Ministry of Agriculture provides all possible support. In the framework of the Rural Development Program, more than 600 support decisions were made in the past period, thanks to which they were able to allocate approximately HUF 170 billion to the sector. He drew attention to the fact that Hungary’s KAP Strategic Plan is currently being implemented. As good news, he announced that much more resources are available for this, thanks to the government’s decision to give the maximum possible co-financing rate of 80% to rural development. Thus, approximately three times the resources of the previous support period are available in the current support period. A priority goal, even in the European comparison, is the validation of high-level animal welfare aspects during the raising of animals, and animal welfare subsidies serve this purpose. “Looking ahead in 10 years, there will be 15% more demand for poultry meat worldwide, which means that there is room for development for the sector, but at the same time, the competition is fierce, and we have to survive in this environment,” concluded the deputy state secretary.
Hungarian poultry products are safe to eat
It was also stated at the press conference that poultry products from domestic production meet the requirements of the strictest EU regulations at the world level (food safety, animal welfare, etc.), so consumers can have a varied, high-quality and safe choice. In addition to raw products, semi-finished products, such as pre-marinated chicken and turkey breasts and thighs, which allow for easy and quick grilling, are also becoming more popular. The press conference talked about the Hungarian Poultry trademark, which means that the animal was raised and slaughtered in Hungary. The goal of the campaign is to get customers to choose as many Hungarian products as possible in the future. The poultry consumption promotion campaign will take place for one month between July 17, 2023 and August 17, 2023, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Marketing Center and the Poultry Product Council.
