The consumer protection controls in Germany found out, that one-third of the bottled suitable quality pestos have unacceptable quality. There were brands that were contaminated with bacterias, had bad taste and produced with poor ingredients as well
The Stiftung Warentest organization tested 30 different brands of pesto. Only three received a good rating, none received excellent rating and every third was considered as low graded. It was found out that the most traditional Genovese pestos contained sunflower oil in spite of olive oil and contained pine nuts instead of cashews, potato or wheat flour instead of parmesan. (MTI)
