Eggs are also becoming more expensive in the EU
According to data from the European Commission, the EU (EU27)’s egg and egg product imports increased by 35 percent to almost 122 thousand tons in 2024 compared to 2023, while the community’s egg and egg product exports increased by 18 percent to 387 thousand tons in 2024 compared to the previous year.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office, Hungary purchased 1.6 thousand tons of shell eggs from the international market in January 2025 (–37 percent compared to the same period of the previous year), of which it imported 20 percent less, 1.3 thousand tons of fresh eggs. The export of shell eggs decreased by 13 percent to 901 tons, of which the export of fresh eggs amounted to 296 tons (+152 percent) in January 2025. According to data from the European Commission, the packing house price of table eggs in the EU was 251 euros/100 kilograms in the first twelve weeks of 2025, which increased by 11 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. According to data from AKI PÁIR, the packing house price of table eggs (M+L) from cage farming in Hungary was 65.53 forints/piece in the first twelve weeks of 2025, which exceeded the average price of the same period of 2024 by 19.1 percent. The packing house price of M size class, boxed eggs increased by 16.8 percent to 67.60 forints/piece, and that of L size class, boxed eggs increased by 15.5 percent to 79.19 forints/piece. The packing house price of M-tray eggs increased by 20.7 percent to HUF 59.84/piece, and that of L-tray eggs increased by 21.4 percent to HUF 65.27/piece. The packing house price of deep-litter table eggs (M+L) was HUF 72.95/piece in the first twelve weeks of 2025, which is 14.4 percent higher than the average price for the same period in 2024.
