Uber returns to Budapest: in cooperation with Főtaxi
Seven and a half years after its withdrawal, Uber is returning to the streets of Budapest in a unique collaboration. The worldwide known car-sharing service is now operating as a partner of Főtaxi in the Hungarian capital. This initiative is outstanding, as it is the first in Europe to enter into a partnership agreement with the local taxi operator Uber.
As a result of the new partnership, the services of Főtaxi will be available through the Uber application. In the spirit of cooperation, F Mobilitás Kft., a subsidiary of Főtaxi, has already officially submitted the necessary dispatch service license application.
According to Uber’s press release, in 2023, despite the fact that their car-sharing service was previously unavailable in Hungary, their application was opened nearly 100,000 times from Budapest. This clearly indicates strong market interest.
When the company left in 2016, it had a significant user and driver base in Hungary, with 160,000 users and 1,200 drivers. The reason for the withdrawal was a change in the law at the time, which was created by the lobbying of taxi drivers in the capital, and which practically made it impossible for Uber to operate in the country.
